From breathtaking views of the lake, the lush greenery and the vibrant wildlife ,Lake Nakuru has been hailed as a bird watcher’s paradise, hosting over 450 species of birds.

But what is the history of this great Lake which officially became a National park in 1961? The history of Lake Nakuru National Park dates back millions of years when volcanic activities shaped the Great Rift Valley. Over time, water from the surrounding highlands gradually flowed into the valley eventually creating the magnificent lake we know today.

What makes this Lake special is the captivating sight of dense concentrations of flamingos which  is truly mesmerizing, creating a scene straight out of a postcard. Among the wildlife you can expect to see comprise of both white and black rhinos, lions, zebras, buffalo’s and different types of gazelles and antelopes, which can be quite a sight. The interior roads are well-maintained and easy to navigate, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable wildlife viewing experience. The park also remains accessible throughout the year thanks to its well-maintained roads and the park’s fencing, which prevents animals from dispersing.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Lake Nakuru National Park enjoys moderate temperatures throughout the year, but the evenings can be cool. We recommend that you bring extra layers of clothing, such as a jacket, sweater or fleece, to ensure you are able to partake of the early morning and afternoon to evening activities comfortably. Also, if you plan to visit during the rainy seasons, you should bring a poncho. The long rainy season initiates in late March and lasts through June with April and May being the primary months of the long rains.

Many visitors combine their Lake Nakuru Park safari with the Great Wildebeest Migration starting in August till October at the Masai Mara National Reserve, and this along with parents bringing their children during school break means that late summer is the busiest time of year for family safaris. Christmas, New Year’s and Easter are also quite busy.
